Sling Carrier Size

What is expected before, during, and after the placement of vaginal sling?

The application of vaginal slings have contributed to the clinical therapy of stress urinary incontinence (SUI).However, complications related to its attachment are also on the rise, based on the results of the September 2011 vaginal mesh meeting by the FDA advisory committee.

The surgeon either uses biological tissues coming from another person or the patient or applies a synthetic mesh material that will serve as the sling. The sling will be surgically positioned under the urethra to create a stronger urethral support and reduce or cure urinary incontinence.

Before the procedure. Your doctor may schedule you for a confirmatory checkup and submit you to various tests like ECG (electrocardiography), urine and blood tests, and chest X-ray.These are performed to identify possible underlying diseases that may disqualify you from surgery. If you are clear in all fields after the tests, then your doctor may proceed with the operation. Your surgeon will also instruct you to hold anticoagulant drugs such as aspirin, Plavix, or Coumadin. You will be advised by your doctor to postpone taking these medications for at least a week before your scheduled surgery. You also need to alert your doctor of any other medications you are taking, especially since you will be kept on non-per-orem (NPO) status at least 12 hours before your operation. An IV line will be established and fluid medications neutralizing stomach acidity will be administered as well, since you will not be permitted to eat nor drink.

Intraoperative arrangements. Most of the time, the implantation of vaginal sling may only be done in the clinic.A small incision is done just above the vagina or into the groin creases. This opening will help the insertion of a vaginal sling and keep it in place through stitches. Depending on the extent of the incontinence and your body’s response to the synthetic material, your surgeon may require you to stay in the hospital. In some instances however, patients may then be sent home immediately after the vaginal sling placement. All the same, your body’s convalescence will be a big deciding factor.

Postoperative instructions. Bleeding symptoms and other unusual signs are checked at intervals. A urinary catheter will be maintained in the bladder or be safely pulled out while you are in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU).Possible erosion of mesh will also be checked by your doctor since mesh erosion are also likely to occur immediately after the surgery.Likewise, your doctor will inform you to limit or keep away from exercises that may strain your muscles fir six to eight weeks. This include any prolonged muscular activity such as running, climbing stairs, lifting objects, and lovemaking.

The surgical implantation of vaginal sling may not be commendable to all patients, but it may be advantageous for some.Planning on pushing through with this kind of surgery is best handled carefully while exploring other treatment options. There is no surgery that is without risk; in this case, you must learn about the potential and various unusual effects before you make a decision. You may achieve compensations through a vaginal mesh lawsuit, but this might never be enough to bring your life back to its optimum level of functioning.
